Making a living after prison is not easy for formerly incarcerated. Criminal records are, of course, a major impediment. Also, parole systems often prioritize surveillance and punishment over reintegration.
Public policy can help in many ways. For example, states could do more to integrate formerly incarcerated people into higher education. Enrolling in college makes a significant difference in finding the right job, and the formerly incarcerated know it. Research shows it also reduces the likelihood of recidivism.
